Work in Progress Wednesday – Purple Scrap Quilt

I’ve had a pile of four-inch purple squares lying around my quilting room for a long, LONG time. Making a scrappy quilt out of them is a kind of spring cleaning. It also reminds me of the very first quilt I ever made, a twin bed-sized quilt made from identical purple squares (I had no idea what I was getting into!) In fact, a few of these patches are from that very first pile of quilt squares, which I bought on Ebay. Even then, I liked buying fabric without having any idea what I would use it for.

The first step was laying out the squares in a more-or-less light/dark pattern:

Then I sewed them into a top:

This top is still a little small to make a truly cozy lap quilt, so I’m going to add borders from this butterfly fabric, which I found several yards of at the thrift store for a dollar a yard.

You can see a lot of other people’s quilts at this week’s Work in Progress Wednesday on Freshly Pieced.

  1. Ive made a similar quilt. I love scrappy quilts…they’re so cozy and interesting to contemplate the different fabrics over a cup of tea on a Sunday morning.

    1. Nita, you’re so right. The fabric matching is half the fun. I’ve always had a crazy (that is, probably unwarranted) confidence in my fabric combinations, and that’s one of my favorite things about quilting.

    1. Thanks, Lisa. A fabric looks so much more beautiful when you know you got something nice for a really cheap price.

  2. That’s beautiful in purple – love it! Have you seen the Fading Charms project on Wedding Dress Blue? I can’t believe the butterfly fabric was only $1/yard. What a lucky find. I have found a nice plaid once, and that’s about it.

    1. Purple is my favorite color. I used to haunt the thrift store and found all kinds of fabric bargains, but now I’m trying to stay away from buying more, even if it’s a tremendous deal, until I can fit all my fabric into my sewing room. I still have a few bins to go! I’ll check out Wedding Dress Blue right now.
