One of the great frustrations you may run into when you bind your quilts is achieving a perfect mitered corner — that is, a corner with a beautiful, crisp 45-degree angle that ends in a sharp point. This video shows the clever (and easy) binding trick quilt designer Patrick Lose uses to achieve those perfect corners every time. We’re definitely going to try this on our next quilt.

The gentleman that is showing the binding corners is he cutting the binding or the quilt corners? Also, could I have information on his quarter inch seam guide? Thank you very much I enjoyed the demonstration. My girlfriend sent it to me!!!

    1. Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for your question. I just watched the video again, and he trims a little corner off just the binding, not the body of the quilt itself. I don’t have any information on his seam guide, but it looks to me like he was using a Juki or Brother single-stitch sewing machine, which comes with that seam guide as one of its accessories. If your machine doesn’t come with a seam guide, I suggest a number of says to create one yourself in our blog post How to Sew a Perfect 1/4″ Seam.

    1. Hi Kendra,

It’s an imitation hand-quilting stitch from the stitch library on my Janome Horizon sewing machine. Unfortunately, the stitches only have numbers, not names, so that’s all the info I have.

  4. Welcome, Dollie! If you’re a brand-new quilter, we recommend starting with our own book, Quilts for Beginners, which you can get here at the shop on our site, on Amazon.com, or other online bookstores. The book will tell you what supplies and tools you need to make your first quilt.

For fabric, quilting supplies and tools, look for a local quilt shop or a big-box craft store like Joann or Michael’s.
