Using Poetry for Quilt Labels

If your quilt is large enough, you can print an entire poem on a printable fabric sheet and use the poem as the label.  The quilt label shown below quotes the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” in memory of a beloved father who died.  Some of Shakespeare’s sonnets are short enough to make beautiful quilt labels. You can find a wealth of beautiful poetry, much of it out of copyright, on the Poetry Foundation website.

  1. I have made a quilt for my friends 60th birthday from floral fabrics that belonged to her now departed mother. I am after a saying to print and attach to the back of the quilt. Her mother’s name was Anne. Any ideas would be helpful

  2. I love your quotes! I always have a hard time knowing what to say on a quilt label — these will be a great help to me! Thank you so very much!

  3. Hi could you tell me how I can have a label (quote) printed for my husband’s tee-shirt quilt which I just finished. Not quilted just yet but for the most part it’s 98% completed. I found a quote which fits it just perfectly “together is our favorite place to be”! We are bike riders and I thought I love to have this put on his quilt as a label from me! Can you tell me how it’s done or who does labels for quilts thank you!!

    1. Great question, Mary A. If you are artsy, you can design your own quilt label and print your design on a printable fabric sheet you can get online or at a crafts store. You need an ink-jet printer to print on fabric. Look for the fabric sheets that say you can wash them after printing.

      If you’re not so confident about designing your own label, you can have a custom quilt label made for you by a designer on Etsy. Just search for “personalized quilt label” or “custom quilt label,” and many different options will come up. You can get printed or embroidered labels, depending on how much you’re willing to spend.

      I love your saying and will add it to the list in the blog post right now!

      1. To print labels on not ink jet, I use freezer paper & iron fabric on the same size as a piece of paper. Design label in word & print. I believe u can find on u tube as well.

  4. Hi Felicity,
    Can you make the labels or where can you get the material for same.
    Have started quilting for my grandchildren and great grandchildren, which I find challenger.

    1. Hi Mary,

      We don’t make quilt labels ourselves from the sayings on our blog page (maybe someday!), but you can make a label from regular quilt fabric or from printable fabric sheets. See our post on making quilt labels for some ideas to get you started. It’s exciting to hear that you’ve just started quilting for your family — there’s no gift quite as cozy and lovable as a quilt made by your own hands.

  5. Thank you for this site. I love these quilt phrase ideas. I have saved several of them. I am actually searching for one for my sweet Aunt who has cancer. I finished the scripture/garden quilt for her last night. Now I need a label but I cant find any referring to Aunts. When I think of my childhood, her face comes to my memories as someone who always offered me smiles and made our family laugh when she was around.

    1. I don’t think we have any quotes that specifically mention aunts, but there are some that mention strength through adversity. My personal favorite is “In the midst of winter, I found inside myself an invincible summer,” by Albert Camus. I used my machine’s alphabet stitches to embroider that saying all around the border of a quilt I gave to a friend who had cancer. She used that quilt when she went to chemotherapy and when she was at home, feeling low.

      I am sure your aunt will take great comfort from your loving gift.

  6. I just finished a quilt for our first great grandson, we had two daughters and between them we have five granddaughters, so this boy is really special besides he had open heart surgery when he was two weeks old but doing just great now, thank you for the great quotes

    1. Congratulations to you and all the younger generations, Kay! Did you use one of the quotes for the quilt label on your great-grandson’s quilt?

  7. My daughter passed away and her friend from college is naming her new baby after her. I’ve made a quilt that consists of pictures of them and novelty prints of things my daughter loved. I am needing help with the dedication and signing of the quilt. HELP. I want to acknowledge their friendship, honor them for naming their daughter after mine, and celebrate the new baby, all in one dedication. HELP!

    1. What a moving situation, Tama. I’m not sure I can come up with a quote that covers all aspects of your situation, but I did find this one that I thought might work in combination with a heartfelt note thanking your daughter’s friend for remembering your daughter in the naming of their new child. Maybe something like this:

      “A sweet friendship refreshes the soul.” Proverbs 27:9
      Thank you for remembering (daughter’s name) at the time of your precious child’s birth.

  8. Hi there. I love these quilt labels. I have been pondering over this for a little while. I have designed an art quilt for my sisters and brother. I am making duplicate ones for each of them. It is a long term project but it developed when we had suddenly and unexpectedly lost our oldest brother. My art quilt is essentially a memory quilt for my deceased parents and my brother. I have no clue as to what to put on a label for them. I hope it is used or displayed rather than put away in a box, but one never knows. Hopefully, these will be completed for Christmas a year from now… at least that is my goal.. If you have any thoughts on memory quilts or passing of loved one or ? I would be grateful. Thank you!

    1. So sorry for your loss, Shannon. These gifts you are making will be such a treasure for your family. I did a little looking for quotes about lost loved ones and found this link, which might be helpful: http://thoughtcatalog.com/lorenzo-jensen-iii/2015/08/100-heart-wrenching-powerful-quotes-about-losing-a-loved-one/

      A lot of the quotes are very sad, but some seem like they might work on your quilt label. Here’s one I like, if you are open to the idea of Heaven:

      If tears could build a stairway,
      And memories a lane,
      I’d walk right up to Heaven
      And bring you home again.
      —Unknown

      Here’s another one I also thought would be appropriate for a quilt label:

      When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.
      —Anonymous

      You have inspired me to add a section on quotes for memorial quilts to this page. Thank you for your comment.

  9. Thank you for these wonderful quilt label ideas. I’m always in a dither as to what to write. I’m in the process of gathering signature squares for my granddaughters wedding quilt. I think I’m going to embroider some of your wedding idea quotes and mix them in with the other squares. Thanks again.

  10. I need a label for a twin size quilt for my cousin’s 18 month old grand-daughter that is in a serious battle with cancer. Any ideas, maybe a scripture or passage of encouragement and or love.

    1. So sorry your grand-daughter is facing this situation, Felice. Several quotes came to mind when I thought about this. The first is one of my all-time favorites, but might be a bit old for a toddler: “In the midst of winter, I found inside myself an invincible summer.” –Albert Camus.

      The second one I found looking at quotes for encouragement in times of illness: “Healing does not mean going back to the way things were before, but rather allowing what is now to move us closer to God.” –Ram Dass

      The third is the lyrics of a gospel song, His Eye is on the Sparrow. It’s long, but I think there are several sections in these lyrics that might work for a quilt label:

      Why should I feel discouraged and why should the shadows come?
      Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home?
      When Jesus is my portion, a constant Friend is He,
      His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
      His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

      I sing because I’m happy;
      I sing because I’m free;
      His eye is on the sparrow
      And I know He watches me.

      Let not your heart be troubled; these tender words I hear;
      And resting on his goodness I lose my doubts and fears;
      Though by the path He leadeth but one step I may see;
      His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
      His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

      I sing because I’m happy;
      I sing because I’m free;
      His eye is on the sparrow
      And I know He watches me.

      Whenever I am tempted; whenever clouds arise;
      When songs give place to sighing; when hope within me dies;
      I draw the closer to Him; from care He sets me free;
      His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
      His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

      I sing because I’m happy;
      I sing because I’m free;
      His eye is on the sparrow
      And I know He watches me…

      I hope these help. Our prayers go out to your family. Christine and Felicity.

  11. I need a label for a memory quilt i just finished. The father owned a bar and saved the crown royal bags. The son asked for a quilt made from the bags. The quilt is finished but i need a label. The bar owner died recently and the son wanted the quilt for his sister to remember tbeir dad. I ended up making two. One for each of them. His is a surprise. I just cant think of an appropriate saying for the label. Please help!!!

    1. Sheila,

      This is a tough one. I have been thinking about it for the past day. I did a little searching into Crown Royal’s ad campaigns and found that they had a slogan “For every king, a Crown Royal.” How about calling the father “The King of [name of bar]”? Or “In memory of the King”? They also had a campaign slogan, “Reign On.” How about “[Name,] Reigning on”? Just a couple of thoughts. I hope these help. I think that whatever you put on the label, the quilt will be treasured by the children, so you don’t have to worry too much. In a pinch, you can always say “Made with love in memory of [name].” The son will love it.

    1. Sorry, Patricia! The quotes you see on the page are all we currently have. We update when someone gives us a good suggestion, so the page listings represent our best and most current. I’ll have to do some searching to see if I can find anything suitable.

  13. Hi I am making a quilt for my best friends husband who is a movie buff, so i have printed old movie stars onto the fabric and would like one square to have something embroidered on it to do with life and our role in life, my hubby came up with something along the lines of *life is but a stage and we are the players* he said he thought shakespear wrote it, any other ideas would be appreciated..thanks

    1. The quote that instantly came to my mind was “Here’s looking at you, kid,” from Casablanca. Without knowing which movies or movie stars your quilt includes, I looked for a list of famous movie quotes and found this list of 100 famous movie quotes (which happens to include “Here’s looking at you, kid”!): http://www.infoplease.com/ipea/A0931686.html

      Hope that helps. I would really love to see a photo of the finished or unfinished quilt.

  14. My Great Grandmother made a quilt top out of our family’s old clothes from the 50’s and 60’s. She gave it to me in 1974. Just a year ago I finally trusted someone to finish it (a family friend). She and her friend did a most beautiful job on it. I would like to have something put on it besides names and dates. I may pass it down to my great niece, her namesake.

    Thank you

    1. Sorry, Brenda, we don’t make quilt labels. You can find them pretty easily with an interenet search for “quilt labels.” Good luck!

  15. Im making two quilts one for my daughter & one for my sister, they are both Mother’s Day gifts. I need help on what to put on these quilts. Thank you. They are both very special to me ❤️❤️

      A couple I liked: “Motherhood. All love begins and ends there.” — Robert Browning.

      There are lots of others. I hope you can find one you really love. Best of luck with the quilts.
