Here’s a suggestion, Felicity. Make your string pieced block 9″ square. When finished, cut it into quarters 4 1/2″ square. Using a solid fabric, add 1 1/2″ sashing between the quarters with a contrasting cornerstone in the center where the four string pieced squares meet. Make enough of these blocks for your quilt. Then, using another solid fabric (different from the one in your blocks) join your blocks with 1 1/2″ sashing and cornerstones. I saw a very old quilt like this hanging in a hospital cafeteria in Arkansas 30 years ago, and doodled it on my paper napkin. I made it from feed sack reproduction fabric for the string piecing, bright yellow solid for the sashing in the blocks, and unbleached muslin for the final sashing. All of my cornerstones were red. It was a breathtaking quilt! I hand quilted it as a gift for my mother-in-law.

Colette…where in Edmonton? I am in Spruce Grove and have TONS of cotton in solids and patterns left over from COVID MASK MAKING….lots of Halloween and Christmas and children patterned fabrics
