Work in Progress Wednesday: Pinwheel Scrap Quilt

I love to start new projects. I like finishing them, too, but I like starting them even more than finishing. Most of my new quilts start when I look around my overstuffed sewing room with a feeling of desperation because I have too many projects in mid-stream, and they clutter up the room so it’s hard to work on the other new projects I want to start.

I’ll see a pile of cut-up fabric that has been sitting around for quite a while. This makes me think to myself, “If I can just use up this pile of fabric, I’ll have a lot more room in my studio.” So I get out the pile of fabric, which also requires me to get out a bunch of other fabric, make some new blocks, cut up a fleece backing, make some binding, and generally wreak mayhem and cause the chaos to get worse.

This week’s work in progress was inspired by a pile of 8-1/2″ red fabric squares I cut up some time ago. I also had a pile of pinwheel blocks I just made because the fabric was so adorable. I looked from one pile to the other and inspiration struck: combine the pinwheel blocks with the red squares! And here is the result.

This is a really scrappy quilt. All the blocks are scrap fabric. Even the binding is scrappy. I combined several lengths of leftover bindings from previous Christmas quilts to make this quilt’s binding.  The unifying theme is the color red. Every block and piece of binding had a red element.
