Thrift Shop Find: Batik Horse Quilt | New Quilters

One of my favorite thrift shops is a little hole-in-the-wall place way out in a small country town near the Pacific Ocean. I drop in there on the way out to the beach, where I walk my dog and stare out to sea while the waves roll in.

I stopped in at the thrift shop last Thursday and saw this quilt hanging outside the shop. I saw instantly that whoever made it had used top-quality batiks.

The label on the back says, “Happy Birthday, S****! “Horse Play” from Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting, Jan/Fed. ’05. Machine pieced, appliqued and quilted by L***, 5/27/05.” (The quilter actually gave her whole name and the city and state where the quilt was made, as a quilter should, but I don’t want to invade her privacy by publishing the details here.)

How did a quilt like this end up in a thrift shop? Did the girl who received it outgrow her horse-crazy phase and move on to other interests? Whatever happened, the gain is mine.
