Everyone Needs Neutrals

Bold colors and prints are wonderful things to have in your fabric stash, but if that’s all you use, they can be too much of a good thing. You need neutral fabrics too — calm, unobtrusive fabrics that help harmonize contrasting colors and create restful places for a viewer’s eye to dwell on your quilts.

My generous friend Ruthmary donated these 28 neutral fat quarters from Moda to bring some beautiful calm to one lucky quilter’s fabric stash. What would you do with them if you’re the winner?

How to Enter the Giveaway

To enter your name, just scroll down to the bottom of the post and leave a comment. The winner will be chosen at random from all the comments received by Monday, April 13.

Note for first-time commenters: Don’t worry if you don’t see your comment right away. All new comments go into my automatic spam filter first to make sure they come from a genuine human. That’s the sad reality of today’s Internet, I’m afraid. But rest assured, since you are a person, your comment WILL get approved and your name WILL be entered in the giveaway.

  84. Hi, I am wondering what pattern you are using for your masks. I have stated using one by Marfy, offered through The Cloth Engineer’s site. I’d like to try a couple from the pattern your husband is wearing. I’m not going out myself, but I have some friends who own a small business, and they want to keep working together and feeding their families. I’ll do what I can to help. I hope you have a safe and happy Easter.

    1. Hi Lynn,

We are using a modified version of a mask pattern from SewitOnline.com. If you visit that site there’s a place to sign up to download a PDF with the pattern pieces. We made our elastic to go around the whole head instead of the ears, as she did in hers, and we are using a heavier-duty wire at the nose area. We are making almost entirely medium masks. Her Large pattern seemed too big for everyone except people with really large heads or big bushy beards or hair.

Here’s a link to the original video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqlmDf6_hsY&t=1063s
I think she has made some updates since then.

  85. Such cute fabric! I would love to make a quilt for my granddaughter’s 1st birthday, coming up in June.

  87. This is such a strange time. A number, if not all, of my quilting friends have been making masks as have I. It seems to help give a little peace to dealing with this time by being helpful which then to me brings a more hopeful feeling. Blessings to you and your husband for helping also.
