Plus One Modern Lap Quilt

Size: 58-1/2″ x 72″ (149 cm x 183 cm)
Skill level: Beginner/easy
This elegantly modern lap quilt is made entirely from 5” squares, and it couldn’t be easier to sew together. The finished quilt is the perfect size to snuggle up under when you’re on the couch watching TV or taking a nap.
I made it to give to my daughter’s math tutor, who helped her survive seven agonizing years of math class with patience and never-failing kindness.

The simple, bold geometric pattern and the solid fabrics are both hallmarks of modern quilts.
The plus-sign pattern announces that this is a math-themed quilt, and I highlighted the math theme in a number of other ways:
- The white print in the quilt has a plus sign motif.
- The machine quilting is also math themed, with large straight-stitched plus signs in the gray fabric:
- Xes representing multiplication symbols in the blue fabric:
- Free-motion-quilted circles representing zeroes in the white fabric.
I love the way the quilting shows through on the solid grey fleece I used to back the quilt. (The pattern includes fabric requirements and cutting instructions for the standard batting/backing fabric combination.)
The finished quilt is a generous lap size.
