Quick and Easy Curls Free-Motion Machine Quilting Motif — Video Tutorial
I hear from lots of New Quilters readers who want to learn more easy free-motion quilting designs. This tutorial video from Laura at Sew Very Easy shows you a motif you can use as an all-over pattern on just about any quilt. Perfection is not required!
Laura also has some good general machine quilting advice worth trying out:
- Before you start quilting, use a Sharpie to practice your design on a large piece of paper. Use a Sharpie instead of a ballpoint pen or pencil because the Sharpie’s thicker line gives you the mental freedom to make larger shapes.
- Test out your stitch on a practice quilt sandwich made from the actual fabrics, batting, and threads you will use in the final quilt.
- Mentally divide your quilt into quarters for machine quilting, and stitch in one quarter at a time. Working in a more limited space makes it easier to handle the quilt while you work. Less wrestling of a bulky quilt through the throat of your sewing machine!

I so enjoyed this video! It was a game changer! I’ve been quilting for awhile have made and free motion quilted 2 queen and 1 king size but I could only quilt one design. This video has given me the confidence to branch out and try something new. I haven’t mastered the “C” design yet but still improving. I have found the best way for me to practice my muscle memory is on a piece of fabric. I get my frixion pen and go to it and then simply iron it away and start all over. Your video has given me new hope! Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video tutorial as you made it look so easy and less stressful! I am currently up to this stage on a babies quilt which has a panel on the front and I have Mickey Mouse and Bambi squares on the back! I have hand sewn around the little chickens on the front panel so far and I was trying to work out what to do with the rest of the front ….whether to hand so around the giraffe, elephant, lion etc or do these! I am new to doing quilting and this quilt is a gift to a lady who came to our place a couple of times to do a little bit of cleaning for us! As in the last 10 months my hubby and I both had heart attacks at the same time, both diagnosed with Parkinson’s, (but my husband has been now diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy), then my two days after Christmas my husband had a stroke followed by another one a week later which also caused a brain hemorrhage!
Anyway she was telling me that she had a new little grandson over in Western Australia so I offered to make this quilt for her as a gift! So again thank you for this tutorial!
Best of luck with the quilt and with your health, Sandra. I hope this year is better for you than the last one.
I love it! You make it look so easy! I am going to try it. Thanks for the great lesson!
Thank you for a very useful idea for a new to machine quilting quilter
Very helpful to learn on a smaller quilt. I actually might get brave enough to try it on my next baby quilt!
